The first chapter of
Slaughterhosue-Five is one of conflicts. Vonnegut finds it hard to write about the massacres that occurred in Dresden. He has no idea what he wants to say. He even says, "I had outlined the Dresden story many times" (5). He admits to having trouble with compositing a story. He had "written five thousand pages..and thrown them all away" (15). Vonnegut had trouble writing a good story about horrific events that happened in Dresden. He even has the guts to say that this book is a failure. Many writers usually do not admit that their story is a failure.
